final round are: Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, the United
States, and the top 2 teams from the preliminary round.
The women's teams competing
are: Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Sweden, and the United States.
Japan faces Germany(2/7), France(2/9) and Belarus(2/10) in Preliminary B league.

If a play-off game is tied at the end of 3
regular periods, a sudden victory overtime period
shall be played according to the IIHF Regulations,
with a duration of 20 minutes in the final gold medal
game and 10 minutes in the other play-off games. If a
play-off game is still tied at the end of a sudden
victory overtime period, then the game-winning
shots shall take place immediately, following the IIHF
Regulations, to determine the winner of the match.
Women
The top 5 teams from the 1997 IIHF Women's World Championship
(Canada, USA, Finland, China, and Sweden), held in Canada from
March 31 to April 6, 1997, along with the team from the organizing
country will compete in the Women's Tournament.
